Landscapes
This is an oil sketch of Mt. Hood which served as a study for a more finished version. I did this from a vantage point called Panorama Point just south of Hood River, Oregon, in 2012. The day was so windy I had to paint in my car and prop the canvas on my steering wheel. It was a hot day and on my way back to Portland I kept all the windows in my Subaru station wagon open. Unbeknownst to me the wind whipped around the back of the wagon where I had my painting and all my supplies. When I stopped for lunch in Bonneville I saw that my palette had flipped over onto the canvas and left some splotchy paint marks. In over forty years of painting I have learned that some mistakes can turn out to enhance a painting. I let the paint marks set up for a day or two, scraped them down, then painted over the marks in the original color but left a little 'taste' of those splotches. If nothing else they remind me of that very windy day.
