This is the Painted Hills in the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument area of Central Oregon. I started the painting on site in 2015, and worked on it off and on over a ten year period in my home studio. There are certain paintings like this, which I work on over a period of years. Other paintings I do quickly. I never really know what a painting will require, whether it will be a long or short haul. Each painting seems to have a life of its own and its own requirements in reaching completion. To the extent I have any 'control' also has to include the ability to let go and allow the painting to unfold on its own terms.
