Landscapes
This study of Smith Rock is a different view done on the same 2005 trip as the other Smith Rock painting on this site. It was painted over a black ground which included a failed jazz painting. Sometimes you get an interesting effect when an old work is painted over. What I remember most about doing this painting is that it was incredibly hot and I felt like I was on a hostile alien planet. It was late in the afternoon as those pointy shadows indicate. I had spent the entire middle part of the day at the air conditioned library in Redmond and coming back out into the heat recalled the painting I had done in Thailand the year before. Somehow I managed two paintings on the Smith Rock trip.
