Landscapes
I love the colors and shapes of rock formations. This is a well known one, Smith Rock, near Redmond in Central Oregon. This formation rises 600 feet above the Crooked River. It is a rugged favorite of rock climbers as well as painters. I made a couple of oil studies prior to painting this one in August of 2005. It gets very hot at that time of year in Central Oregon and the days I went there it was in the upper 90's. I do not do well in heat and could only work early in the day or late in the afternoon. A straw hat with a wide brim helps along with plenty of water.
